Metallurgical Slag is a waste resulting from steel production.
During smelting, slagging agents and fluxes are added to the steelmaking furnace to remove impurities from the steel scrap and other ferrous feeds.
The slags secure the liquid metal from outside oxygen and maintain temperature by forming a lid. Being lighter than the liquid metal, the slag floats and can be removed with ease.
With the global slag generation estimated at 500 million tons a year, the world will produce between 30 billion and 40 billion tons of slag by the end of the 21st century, accumulated in large piles that are burdening the environment.
The recovered FeM and FeO can be used for steel production creating circular economy.
